Mezcal En Mayo

Often misconceived as a celebration of Mexican independence, Cinco de Mayo is more significant in America and mostly ignored outside the state of Puebla. It was there that a vastly outnumbered Mexican army defeated the French in 1862, spoiling Napoleon’s quest for a base from which to supply the Confederacy and prolong the Civil War.The holiday’s popularity has grown in the 150 years since, and thanks to booze marketers, it’s now primarily a reason to drink margaritas poorly made with cheap tequila. Yet, a nuanced holiday calls for a nuanced liquor. We recommend another Mexican spirit: mezcal.

“Americans live under the anarchy of their possessions, a virtual avalanche of clutter…[which] reflects the mind-set of the modern household — overburdened, disorganized and compulsive.”
– The Associated Press

If a disheveled home is contributing to a scattered mind and an inhospitable environment, it’s time to banish the disorder. While the bulk of the load is on your shoulders, a family-run, American-made company can at least get you properly equipped.

Miracle One

Two sons of the South, Lane Shackelton of Atlanta and Ryan Donnelly of Nashville, met during their time at Sewanee, but it was later – in California – where their friendship and boutique wine, Miracle One, were built. After sampling their outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, we connected with the guys to learn more about their journey of starting a wine label.

Southern View: Chancellor Warhol

To some outsiders, Nashville is still perceived of as a town full of sequined jeans, cowboy hats and greasy spoons. Yet, the world is waking up to the reality that there are multiple faces to the city – especially in its evolving music scene.

Perhaps no one embodies this “new” culture better than local musician Chancellor Warhol. His hip hop/indie rock sound and his emphasis on fashion and art seem taken from the streets of New York, yet Chancellor was born and raised in Nashville. We sat down with Chancellor to talk about the evolution of Music City, his recent success and newest EP, Playlist for Edie.
